The Community Health Nurses' Training College (CHNTC), Tamale, is Ghana's premier institution dedicated to the training of preventive and public health nursing professionals. Established on 1st May 1960, the college has a proud history of producing competent, ethical, and community-oriented healthcare professionals who serve across the length and breadth of Ghana.
CHNTC was established to serve the Northern and Brong Ahafo Regions with an initial student population of about 20. Over the decades, the college has grown significantly, currently boasting a student population of over 700 across two campuses. The institution is noted for high academic performance and discipline, maintaining a strong commitment to quality health education.
The college's uniqueness is based on its community-centered approach to nursing education. Our pedagogical philosophy emphasizes the need for healthcare training institutions to play active roles in addressing societal health challenges, particularly in rural and underserved communities. This philosophy is borne out of a new thinking in health education that emphasizes practical, field-based training as a critical component of professional preparation.
As a nationally recognized institution, CHNTC operates under the oversight of the Ministry of Health and the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana. The college is committed to maintaining the highest standards of academic excellence, quality assurance, and effective governance in all its operations.
We instil in our students a deep sense of compassion and empathy for the communities they serve, recognizing that quality healthcare begins with genuine care for others.
We are committed to the highest standards of academic and professional excellence, ensuring our graduates are thoroughly prepared for the demands of modern healthcare practice.
We uphold the principles of honesty, transparency, and ethical conduct in all our academic and administrative processes, fostering a culture of trust and accountability.
We are dedicated to serving communities through health education, preventive care, and public health advocacy, preparing nurses who are true agents of positive change.
CHNTC operates from two campuses, both located in Tamale, Northern Region of Ghana:
The main campus, located close to Sakasaka Quarters, houses the administrative offices, main lecture halls, demonstration rooms, library, and student facilities.
Our second campus provides additional lecture facilities, clinical training spaces, and student accommodation to support the growing student population.
